The history of Skjern Reberbane
On the Reberbanen you can see one of the country's few preserved original ropeways. Here, ropes have been made in the same way as they have been for hundreds of years. The ropeway is only a few meters wide but about 100 meters long. A rope maker has often walked 8-12 km in a working day - and mostly backwards!
In 1896, the rope maker Jens Sahl came to Skjern. These were the years when development was as fast-paced as the new railroad, so a rope maker was needed to supply the town with ropes. Jens Sahl bought a piece of land and built a ropeway. Later it was covered and he was one of the first in Skjern to get electricity. Skjern Reberbane is today taken back to the time around 1905.
