Ludvig Mylius-Erichsen was born on January 15, 1872 in Viborg, but his family moved not long after to Ringkøbing, where his father, Peter Henrik Erichsen, was employed as a police officer.
As a young man, Mylius-Erichsen went to Copenhagen to study, earning money as a journalist and author alongside his studies. Many of his stories and plays are set in West Jutland. Here he tells of the fjord, the moors, the violent North Sea and the outcasts.
In 1902-04 Mylius-Erichsen participated in the Literary Expedition to Greenland, which included the well-known Greenland explorer Knud Rasmussen. In 1906-08 he was the leader of the Denmark Expedition, whose purpose was to map the northeast coast of Greenland. The expedition went wrong and in November 1907 Mylius-Erichsen and two of his travel companions were killed: N.P. Høeg Hagen and Jørgen Brønlund.
The statue in front of Ringkøbing Museum was erected in 1916.
