At first glance, the church in Hanning looks like most other medieval churches in western Jutland - and that is already an experience - but if you take the time to examine the church more closely, you come across something you don't find in many churches: a remnant from the Danish Viking Age.
In Hanning Church there is a rune stone with the inscription "...Tues son erected this stone after Gyde his mother...".
The stone was reused as a building stone when the church's priest's door, a special entrance door for the priest, was bricked up.
The rune stone in Hanning was carved (made) after Christianity was introduced in Denmark - that is why it also shows, side by side with Thor's hammer, two crosses. Bork Vikingehavn a copy of the runestone is used as a stepping stone for the harbor's consecrated church, St. Erasmus.
