Lønborg Hede was previously part of the Lønborg bishopric, which for centuries has been located in the Skjern River Valley, west of Lønborg Church. Large areas of the heath have never been cultivated, preserving valuable soil profiles and plant communities of great scientific importance.
In 1970, around 370 hectares of Lønborg Hede was protected to preserve these unique soil profiles and plant communities. This protection, which prevented further cultivation of the heath, was strongly supported by botanists and geologists. Later, the state bought the part of the heath that belonged to Lønborggård.
Today, Lønborg Hede is an obvious place to visit to experience the beautiful untouched nature.
