A trip to Hanning is a trip back in time. Burial mound after burial mound lies in a long row. The burial mounds, which date back to the Bronze Age, tell not only about the burial rituals of the past. They also tell a different story: Why are there mounds and why are they here?
For many years, archaeologists have theorized that the burial mounds at Hanning were located along the ancient north-south road. Excavations and aerial photo archaeology show that Bronze Age West Jutlanders buried their loved ones along their roads. The roads that were used for warfare, trading goods and much more. And we still drive there. The mound row can be followed along highway 11 from Hanning and southwards, a wondrous sight that bears witness to a past where roads, like today, were the arteries of society.
