Kapels Kilde was just one of perhaps 700 holy springs in Denmark. Belief in the power of the spring probably dates back to ancient times, but it also became part of the medieval Catholic Church's world of faith.
Located in the meadow right between the church and the vicarage in Bølling, it became too much for the parish's Lutheran pastor, who stopped the spring sometime in the 1800s. That was the end of papism - and there was no longer any need for the small recess in the south wall of the church, where the healed used to leave their thank-you gifts.
The healing waters of the spring must have been particularly good for problems with the eyes or limbs.
