1943 and the Second World War was at its height. On the night of September 4, activity was hectic. Hundreds of British bombers attacked Berlin. When the planes flew away, they left more than 550 dead. But there were also casualties on the British side.
On the way back, Avro Lancaster III EE138 was attacked by a JU 88C-6 night fighter. The plane crashed with a violent explosion in Fuglbjerg, west of Stadil. The eight people on board could not be identified and they are still resting in the soft meadow soil.
Avro Lancaster III EE138 was just one of three Lancaster crashes in Denmark that night.
To honor the fallen, the residents of Stadil first erected a wooden cross. In 1950, a memorial stone was erected and there is also a memorial plaque. In 2013, a propeller blade from the plane was erected on the site.
