When Dejbjerg Plantation was cultivated in the early 1900s, 118 ha. of Dejbjerg Bakker or Dejbjerg Hede was allowed to remain untouched until it was protected in 1972. Today, the heath is managed to preserve the open expanses and to ensure that no self-seeded trees grow.
A walk on Dejbjerg Heath is a trip back to the past. To the Ice Age, when the ground beneath the heath emerged as sandy meltwater surfaces. And to the Bronze Age - at the western end of the heath you can experience 25 ancient mounds.
Standing on the hilltops, you can not only feel the rush of the past, you can also see the markers of history on the horizon. If you count on a clear day, you can see 20 church towers.
The heath also tells the story of the area's squatters. Once upon a time, this was where the outcasts of society went to make a life for themselves. There are still traces of their racketeering bullets.
The area offers good opportunities for walking, including three marked routes.
