ARV 178/372- Strandgården, Henneby

  • Total excavation of a 2,700 m2 area prior to the development of cottage plots, site numbers 190702-222 and 226.
  • The oldest activity consists of a cultivation layer/culture layer/sand flight layer with pottery from the Middle Ages. From this period, a small boulder-strewn field, a presumed ditch around a toft, a ditched garden with digging traces and a road have been uncovered, all respecting each other.

    A younger part of the settlement also includes gardens, now with significant amounts of reddish peat ash, while older traces have an absence of this. A ground plan of a right-walled building probably belongs to the younger part, while any buildings for the older settlement may be located under an unexamined area between two building plots.
  • A broad dating framework for the settlement is medieval-renaissance. The oldest available map layers (Concept and Original 1 maps) do not show any buildings in the area. There are only a few traces of prehistoric activities in the area, in the form of a few flint flakes.

It's well worth a visit. You'll learn a lot about fishing and the history of Hvide Sande. You can look at the fish in the aquariums. Very nice.
