West Coast Route
A bike ride along the west coast offers scents of rosehip bushes and salt water, birds chirping in your ears and views of heather-clad dunes and the blue-green sea.
All along the way, all senses are bombarded with impressions. Heather and rosehips along with pine, sea buckthorn and blueberries provide fine spicy scents. Sea and fjord give off different scents - and of course fresh fish smells too.
The lapping of the waves and the whistling of birds provide a lovely soundscape on the moors, where cars and cars and people are no longer heard.
An international nature trail
The West Coast Route is a nature trail that runs all the way from the Danish/German border to Skagen. Yes, in fact, it is part of the 6000 kilometer long route The North Sea Cycle Route, which follows the coastline of Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, England, Scotland, Norway, Sweden - and back to Denmark, connected by ferries between Holland/England, Scotland/Norway, Sweden/Denmark.
Hvide Sande and Søndervig
In the Hvide Sande area, the cycle path is as close to the dunes as possible. In some places, the summer cottage roads are used, and in Hvide Sande and Søndervig you have to go straight onto the asphalt road, and then hit the cycle route again outside the city limits. The trip from Søndervig to Nymindegab is about 30-40 kilometers.
It is somewhat winding and you should be aware that it is a gravel path, best suited for bikes with wide tires.
Depending on where you start your route, there are break options in Hvide Sande, Søndervig at Lyngvig Fyr - or on a lovely patch of sunshine sheltered from the westerly wind, sitting in the warm sand of the dunes.
