The eel weirs on Ringkøbing Fjord
The eel drifters were built locally, many of them at Hvide Sande - ULF was built in Sdr. Lyngvig. The eel drifters often had a pond where the eels could swim around alive until the boat docked.
The eel drifters at Ringkøbing Fjord differed from the drifters in other fjords in that they were very wide, were keel-built and had no lowering keel. They also had only one mast with a large and wide gaff sail, which had a boom that went all the way to the stern. The earliest boats, however, did not have a boom.
Locally, they were called tugboats, just as eel fishing with driftwood was called 'dragging eels' in West Jutland.
