The rescue accident
On December 9, 1954, a very tragic accident occurred when a lifeboat capsized. On the way home from a dangerous operation, the boat was hit by a strong squall from behind, throwing the lifeboat over and the crew overboard. Five rescuers drowned while people in Hvide Sande watched the lifeboat overturn and 21 children were orphaned. The accident was not only significant for the local community - the funeral was attended by three times as many people as lived in the town.
The lifeboat MRB 21 has been in safe harbor at Fiskeriets Hus for many years. But the harsh West Jutland climate and the ravages of time have left their mark on the boat. Thanks to Hvide Sande Elfond, Fiskeriets Hus now receives financial support to preserve the lifeboat and the important story it tells about Hvide Sande.
