What the bunker hid
- A German soldier tells us
In the exhibition "What the bunker hid - the story of a German soldier", the late marine infantryman Gerhard Saalfeld talks about his experiences in the bunker on the west coast of Jutland. In 1945, Saalfeld was in the same bunker with nine other boys, and several of the excavated objects are his. Saalfeld's bunker is located about 5 km north of Søndervig.
In the exhibition you can experience what it was like to live in a bunker. In a reconstructed bunker, you can lie down in one of the uncomfortable bunk beds - Saalfeld was in the lower one - or turn the crank on the ventilation system that kept the air clean in the stuffy bunkers.
In a movie, Saalfeld tells his story. He talks about growing up in Nazi Germany, where all children were collectively enrolled in the Hitler Youth, about war toys and about everyday life and its routines on the windswept west coast during the Second World War.
