Take a walk on the heath

Help make a difference for heathland biodiversity!

The climate crisis and the plight of biodiversity are frequently in the news, and it can be hard to see how you can make a difference in the bigger picture. But we give you a very concrete place to start - on our walks on the moors.

In addition to getting a thorough introduction to the heath and its history, knowledge about why it is important to preserve the heath and an insight into the work of heath care, you will receive expert guidance so that you can help the heath's biodiversity along the way - for the benefit of butterflies, hedgehogs and the beautiful heather, among other things.

The moorland tours end with coffee and tastings of delicious local specialties produced on or near the West Jutland moors.

You can take a walk on the moor every Wednesday at 13:00.

The experience in a nutshell

It's one thing that nature on the moors is truly beautiful, but this is a unique trip because you get to create your own impressions and sense your surroundings. There's the smell of resin and heather, the moorland floor tingles and crawls, you can sense animals at the edge of the forest watching you, and you discover how strong you really are when you pull up a uprooted tree to help the heath. It must be experienced!

Why does the heat need help?

Since our ancestors cut down the primeval forest thousands of years ago for firewood and construction, leaving the land impoverished, the heath has slowly, piece by piece, taken over the landscape of West Jutland. The heathland is therefore what we today call a cultural landscape, as it is man-made. But even though the heathland soil is nutrient-poor, biodiversity is rich, and as the heath disappears from the map, so does the animal and plant life that thrives on the heather-covered hills. The large areas of heathland also hide interesting traces of our ancestors, as they have not been dug away by the farmer's plow.

A strong partnership behind the tour
The new heath care tours have been developed in a strong collaboration between Ringkøbing Fjord Museums, Ringkøbing-Skjern Municipality and Destination Vesterhavet in a desire to contribute to preserving the unique natural areas in the municipality and at the same time give both locals and tourists unforgettable experiences and a better understanding of the unique nature and culture in Ringkøbing-Skjern Municipality.
