The bunker that blew free
A pocket of time opened up by the storm
In the spring of 2008, a German crew bunker blew free of the sand in the dunes near Søndervig. It had been buried here since 1945, when the Germans cleared it. Inside, the furnishings were still as they were when it was inhabited. In the bunker exhibition at Ringkøbing Museum , you have the opportunity to enter a reconstruction of the same bunker and feel the atmosphere in its dark rooms. Sit at the wooden table and listen to German radio, turn on the ventilation system and try out the uncomfortable bunk beds.
A German soldier tells...
Gerhard Saalfeld was stationed in the same bunker during World War II, which was blown open in 2008. Several of the objects found in the bunker were his, and they are now part of the exhibition at Ringkøbing Museum. In a film in the exhibition, Gerhard Saalfeld talks about growing up in Nazi Germany, the war toys and the collective enrollment in the Hitler Youth. Of course, he also talks about everyday life in the bunker during the war - the daily trip with the broom to sweep the bunker free of sand, shopping trips to the grocery store and more.
