Lecture - The attic wing from the old merchant's house in Østergade - stranded goods from St. George meets trade and market town elite in Ringkøbing
February 21, 2024 at 19:30 - February 21, 2024 at 21:30
Based on a copper wind vane from the old grocery store in Ringkøbing, which is on display at the Judge's Office, a story unfolds about the importance of the grocery store and its owners throughout the 1800s.
At the same time, the latest studies of the wind vane are presented as material evidence of copper as stranded goods and commodities in a time when strandings were of great resource importance, and we attempt to accurately determine the origin of the copper.
Specifically, it's copper from one of the stranded British ships of the line HMS St. George or HMS Defence in 1811 - we'll explain in detail how this is connected and why ships were copper-skinned.
