Publication reception - "The Book" about Skjern and Tarm

October 3, 2025, 2:00 PM – October 3, 2025, 6:00 PM

New book tells the story of Skjern and Tarm

The 150th anniversary of the establishment of the West Jutland Long Line through Skjern and Tarm has prompted the publication of an important new book about the history of the river valley and the two towns on either side of Skjern Å. The book is a beautiful book that looks great on any coffee table, and local pride is printed on every page.

Skjern Development Forum and Tarm Development Forum are publishing the book "Spor i ådalen. Skjern and Tarm - and out into the world..." in collaboration with Ringkøbing Fjord Museums. The book is the result of close collaboration between local enthusiasts and Ringkøbing Fjord Museums' historians and archaeologists. It is financially supported by local contributors and Ringkøbing-Skjern Municipality.

The book tells the history of the area from the Ice Age to the society we know today. The story traces the importance of Skjern Ås for the first urban development in Skjern and Tarm, to when the railroad really gave the two towns a boost, and on to the world we know today. The book also describes how West Jutland's historical focus has previously moved from north to south towards Germany, rather than east, as it often is today.

The "Book" about Skjern and Tarm will be launched at a reception on Friday, October 3

The book has been a long time in the making and has already been referred to as "The Book" about Skjern and Tarm. While the main chapters are written by the museum's historians and archaeologists, the book is also peppered with sidebars where the group of authors has been expanded with engaged citizens. Local pride is evident, and the book perpetuates the stories that have helped shape the towns and the people who live there today.

In connection with the release, everyone is invited to a festive celebration on Friday, October 3 with a program that of course takes place in the two cities - and across the river valley by train:

Furniture Station in Tarm at 14.00 - 16.00
Apple cake will be served ad libitum, speeches and presentation and sale of the book.

Free train transportation between Tarm and Skjern is kindly sponsored by GoCollective.
Places are allocated on a first come, first served basis.

Remisen in Skjern at 16.00 - 18.00
Tapas and white wine, speeches, presentation and sale of the book.

Speakers include Mayor Hans Østergaard, Deputy Mayor Søren Elbæk, 2nd Deputy Mayor Kristian Andersen and Culture Committee Chairman Erik Viborg.

Skjern Vindmølle

Very welcoming

Was there for the first time. But was very welcoming. Nice elderly ladies offering tea, coffee and homemade things. A small art exhibition was also just there. 👍

Received a thorough guided tour

We got a really good tour, with good explanation of all the functions of the mill. As well as the history of the building of the mill, which has been moved 2 times. We say thank you very much.
