Lecture - "There is no such thing as why." Why soldiers commit war crimes and genocide.
March 20 at 19:30 - March 20 at 21:30
When Primo Levi is interned in Auschwitz, he asks an SS guard for an explanation for a bizarre assault.
- "Why?" he asks.
- "There's no such thing as why here," the guard replies.
Correspondent and military historian Poul Høi takes this lack of logic as a starting point in his exploration of the motives behind war crimes and genocide.
When he wrote his thesis on a German assassination squad during World War II, it turned out that none of the common explanations fit.
The members of the murder squad were not raging anti-Semites or ardent Nazis, they were not brutalized, seasoned or radicalized; instead, Poul Høi found a banal and therefore more sinister explanation, which he uses in this lecture to put the Russian war crimes in Butja and other Ukrainian cities into perspective.
